45 Mazı Underground City and Rockfall Precautions:
Mazı Underground is located 18 km from Ürgüp and 10 km east of Kaymaklı Underground City. Mazi is carved to the west of the village perpendicular to the valley slope. It is famous for its many rock tombs belonging to the Roman and Byzantine periods. The city, which was called Mataza in ancient times, has four different entrances. But currently only 2 floors of the underground city, can be visited. One of the most magnificent parts of the city, which is thought to have been built to be used for a very long time, with its abundance of animal stables and şırahane, is its church, which can be reached through short corridors opened from the stables.
Recently, there was a risk of rockfall in the cliffs above the city, and the rocks in question were stabilized using steel cables. This intervention is also significant as an example of measures that can be taken against natural disasters such as rockfalls.
