Kırkşehitler (Holy Forty Martyrs)  Church

The Forty Martyrs from Sebaste (Sivas), or the Holy Forty, are a group of soldiers martyred in 320 belonging to the 12th Lightning Legion (Legio XII Fulminata). This event occurred during the period of Licinius (Licinius), when Christianity was banned in the Roman Empire.  The Governor of Sebaste, Agricola, learned that 40 young soldiers from the Roman army were faithful Christians, even though they knew they would be punished.  Forty soldiers were killed for disobeying the King's edict that those who did not believe in Roman gods would be punished by death or torture.  The commemoration of the Forty Martyrs is very common and many churches have been built in their name (https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C4%B1rk_%C5%9Eehitler_Olay%C4%B1). One of these churches is in Şahin Efendi Village of Ürgüp. The church, which was built inside the fairy chimney, was recently restored.
